Join us for the inaugural meeting of Bright Futures, our new science fiction book club! The first title under discussion will be Annalee Newitz’s Nebula-nominated SF debut novel, Autonomous.
Earth, 2144. Jack is an anti-patent scientist turned drug pirate, traversing the world in a submarine as a pharmaceutical Robin Hood, fabricating cheap medicines for those who can’t otherwise afford them. But her latest drug hack has left a trail of lethal overdoses. Hot on her trail is an unlikely pair: Eliasz, a brooding military agent, and his indentured robotic partner, Paladin. As they race to stop information about the sinister origins of Jack’s drug from getting out, they begin to form an uncommonly close bond that neither of them fully understands.
And underlying it all is one fundamental question: is freedom possible in a culture where everything, even people, can be owned?
“Something genuinely and thrillingly new” – William Gibson
“Holy hell. Autonomous is remarkable” – Lauren Beukes
The book club will be pretty informal in general, but especially so since this is its first meeting. Come along to discuss the book, but also to help decide the future direction of a group whose stated purpose is the discussion of science fiction titles which tackle socio-political issues. Like our other book clubs, Bright Futures will provide a free, friendly and gentle environment in which opinions can be shared and new appreciations discovered. There will be wine, curious minds and relaxed conversation. So come and join our warm bookish group – all are welcome.
(Readers don’t have to buy the bookclub book from the shop, however we do rely on those booksales to be able to keep the event & refreshments free; to pay our booksellers for their time prepping & running book clubs and to keep the lights on. Please do NOT buy your books from am*z*on (here’s why), if you cannot afford to buy the book then PLEASE support your local library.)
