We live in a period of resurgent global tension. Countries are becoming increasingly aware of their borders, their differences and their security. International political rhetoric worldwide is more violent and aggressive than it has been for decades, and the threat of global war seems permanently on the horizon. Madness reigns, and nuclear weapons are, once again, in threat of being unleashed in acts of unprecedented brutality and destruction.
Three time Nobel Peace Prize nominee and lifelong global peace builder Scilla Elworthy, a Scottish native, gained global recognition for her work with Oxford Research Group to develop effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policy-makers worldwide and their critics. She founded Peace Direct to fund, promote and learn from local peacebuilders in conflict areas and co-founded Rising Women Rising World and FemmeQ . Scilla was awarded the Niwano Peace Prize in 2003 and was adviser to Peter Gabriel, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Sir Richard Branson in setting up ‘The Elders’.
Scilla is a behemoth of peace politics with several critically acclaimed books to her name. She joins us to discuss her new book The Business Plan for Peace and will offer over 30 ways in which anyone can escape the grip of fear and help develop a world without war.
