Sound System: Dave Randall on the Political Power of Music

October 19, 2017 at 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

Free - £12.99

8pm start, Thursday 19th October, in the Bookshop. A handful of free places are available, after which Event Vouchers are either £3 or £12.99 (booking below.)

For decades, activists have embraced the power of music to further their causes and beliefs. From Billie Holiday, to anti-Nazi campaigners, to the Civil Rights Movement and the socio-cultural upheavals of the 1960s and 1970s – music has played a pivotal role in spreading the political messages of its writers and performers.

In Sound System, left-wing political activist and musician Dave Randall explores how music has been used over the years to challenge the mainstream status quo. In a journey spanning the cultural and political impact of the music of the 20th and 21st centuries, Dave pays visits to everyone from Richard Wagner to Tom Robinson, Radiohead to Bruce Springsteen, demonstrating how music has played an important, yet often overlooked, role in uprisings and protests.

Join us in the bookshop for what is sure to be a stimulating and engaging event with one of Britain’s most notable activist musicians. Dave will be giving a  talk, followed by an opportunity for Q&A and a book signing.

Dave Randall has been active on the music scene since the 1990s, performing with bands such as Faithless and Slovo, and has played with the likes of Dido and Sinead O’Connor. He is a long-time supporter of the Stop the War Coalition, and provided some of the music used in Jeremy Corbyn’s 2015 leadership campaign videos.

Please note Event Vouchers are not posted out, they are held in the bookshop for collection on the night. Only ID is necessary to collect these on the door.
