John MacLean is an icon of Scottish radicalism; a committed socialist and a lifelong activist and demonstrator, Maclean was involved in most of the major strikes of his age – the Singer strike of 1911, the anti-War agitation of 1914, or the Rent Strike in 1915.
We’re thrilled to host the launch of Gerard Cairns’ new book The Red and the Green – a Portrait of John Maclean. Gerry is a former Secretary of the John Maclean Society, and is an expert on the Scottish revolutionary. This new biography is a brilliant addition to the scholarship on MacLean, properly positioning MacLean in his historical, political and cultural context and reviving the warm, complex man behind the icon.
The Red and The Green is an absolute must read which has already been warmly reviewed by The National.
