We are excited to read and discuss Wioletta Greg’s Swallowing Mercury, translated by Eliza Marciniak, on Monday 21 May at 7pm at the bookshop.
A peculiar coming-of-age tale unlike any other, Swallowing Mercury follows adolescent Wiola in her imaginings and musings as she goes about life, while all the while adulthood approaches. Set in a fictional town in Poland under a communist regime, she lives in a world of Catholicism and pagan superstition co-existing without the slightest raised eyebrow.
“This enchantingly elliptical fiction debut by British-domiciled Polish poet Wioletta Greg (right) sparkles with a gem-like quality.” – Kapka Kassabova, The Guardian
Longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize in 2017, this promises to be an enchanting and intriguing read.
