Playfully concerned with things, and words as things, the poems of Brightwork lend an ear to the surrounding soundscape of creaking pontoons, whistling patent slips, and harbourside voices. Brightwork was written during a residency at Underfall Yard, a working boatyard in Bristol, and is intended as a close reading of place, and of the objects in that place, turning its attention to slipways and skips, sluice paddles and slotting machines, boats and buoys.
Brightwork is Suzannah’s second Guillemot Press publication, following the success of her beautiful illustrated and interlocking double-pamphlet Marine Objects / Some Language in 2020. Although the original illustrated pamphlet has sold out, Marine Objects/Some Language is available in text only format in our Offcuts series.
Suzannah V. Evans has published poems in ENGLISH, The London Magazine, New Statesman, and Carcanet’s New Poetries VIII, with others broadcast on BBC Radio Bristol. She has read her work at Keats House, London, where she organised Keats House: New Poets, for York Literature Festival and StAnza Poetry Festival, and at Underfall boatyard in Bristol, where she was poet in residence in 2019. She is the winner of the 2020 Ivan Juritz Prize for Creative Experiment and of a 2020 Northern Writers’ Award from New Writing North.
