Abolition Library: Victoria Law on justice beyond prisons
Featured Speakers
Victoria Law
It is an honour to partner with Dr Kirstin Anderson of Edinburgh Napier University to bring Edinburgh a public lecture by the esteemed activist and journalist Victoria Law.
Victoria Law is an American anarchist activist, prison abolitionist, writer, freelance editor, and photographer. Her books include Resistance Behind Bars: The Struggles of Incarcerated Women, Prison by Any Other Name: The Harmful Consequences of Popular Reforms and Prisons Make Us Safer: And 20 Other Myths about Mass Incarceration. She writes about the intersections between mass incarceration, gender and resistance, and has worked with incarcerated women to develop their writings for other publications.
This event is for anyone interested in the abolition of carceral practices and alternatives to punishment, including those who are just starting to read about abolition and those who are already undertaking abolitionist and transformative justice practices in their community.
This talk is a closing highlight to a day-long workshop and anyone can attend both/either - full details of that here.
Accessibility: The Quaker Meeting House Building is fully accessible with a ramp at the front door, a lift to all floors and accessible toilets. Induction loop facilities are available in the main rooms. Please note mask wearing is required at this event.
We're grateful to our partners at The Scottish Centre for Crime & Justice Research for sponsoring this event and Victoria Law's visit to the UK.
