At 6pm the video for the event will appear just above (where the event banner image is just now) so you can watch things live right here, or loop back to watch the recording later.

The Bread and Roses Award is a book prize with a difference: presented by the Alliance of Radical Booksellers, and without the backing of corporate sponsors, the award seeks to recognise and celebrate excellence in the field of radical political non-fiction.

The Award was established by Housmans in 2012. It has since been run in collaboration with Five Leaves Bookshop and then us at Lighthouse.

From over 60 submissions, our panel of judges were thrilled to present a shortlist of 6 titles earlier this year. At this event to announce the winner we will hear from the authors and editors of all 6 shortlisted books!

The books selected for the shortlist are vastly different in their topics, yet all relevant to the many political crossroads that we are facing. The books cover medical racism and the need for decolonisation, the consequences of capitalism on neurodiversity, the UK’s relationship with foreign state political lobbyists, genocide, displacement and refugees, women’s rights and the place of art in liberation, and the startling inequality in the UK itself.

Come find out more about these 6 tremendous books from those who brought them into the world.

This event will last 1 hour online, we'll get a wee introduction to each book, an opportunity to ask speakers questions and then we'll announce the 2024 Winner of the Bread & Roses Award live!
