We welcome Janey Jones to Book Fringe 2023 to introduce her new book The Edinburgh Seven - a story of the first group of seven women admitted to study towards a degree in medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1869.
Janey takes us through how and why the women, looking for ‘a fair field and no favour’ , were met with derision from some professors and fellow students who resisted their right to be able to practice as doctors, a struggle including legal battles and court cases. The women were eventually forced to leave without their degrees – until they were awarded posthumously in 2019.
Janey is joining Lighthouse as part of this year’s Book Fringe: ALT Edition in partnership with two other Edinburgh indie bookshops – Argonaut and Typewronger.
