Emma Healey chaired by Heather Darwent

How about breaking up the wintriest of months with a tale of power and obsession? Emma Healey, author of the much loved Elizabeth is Missing, offers just this and we’re delighted to be welcoming her to the shop on January 28th!

In Emma’s new novel Sweat, themes of exercise addiction, coercion and power dynamics are placed centre stage, all in the claustrophobic environment of a gym.

Protagonist Cassie works as a personal trainer. One day Cassie’s controlling ex partner, Liam, comes back into her life. Cassie suddenly has a chance to take control after the pain and anguish he caused her when they were together.

SWEAT asks how far we'd go to take revenge on someone who wronged us if we were given the chance. Be prepared for a twisty read that will keep your heart pounding with the shadow of deeper questions of power and control close behind.

Please be aware that this book/event deals with themes of body image and control as well as exercise addiction.

Our speaker

Emma Healey grew up in London and completed her first degree in bookbinding. She then worked for libraries, bookshops, art galleries and universities before studying for the MA in Creative Writing at UEA in 2010. She is the author of Whistle in the Dark, and Elizabeth is Missing, which was a Sunday Times Bestseller, won the Costa First Novel Award 2014, and was made into a BBC film starring Glenda Jackson. She lives in Norwich with her husband, daughter and cat, and regularly volunteers for Vision Norfolk with a group of visually impaired, and incredibly imaginative, creative writers.

Our host is the brilliant Heather Darwent, author of The Things We Do To Our Friends, and the upcoming Sharp Scratch.
