Catherine Joy White
In This Thread of Gold, Catherine Joy White takes on the legacy of Angela Davis’ Women, Race and Class and Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider and brings new life to the history of Black women’s resistance.
We're thrilled to be launching This Thread of Gold into the world with our friends at Fringe of Colour, a fitting collaboration to mark the close of their festival and to celebrate a debut book by award-winning writer, actor, filmmaker, and gender advisor to the UN Catherine Joy White!
This Thread of Gold features revolutionary women from across time and space, giving a platform to emotional nuance, individual motivation and richness of expression. Alice Walker to Beyonce, Audre Lorde to Doreen Lawrence, Aretha Franklin to Zendaya: Catherine Joy White charts her own journey to self-discovery through the prism of extraordinary women to create a beautiful tapestry of Black joy.
The book is a rich tapestry that spans Malinda Russell, the author of the earliest known cookbook by a Black woman, to the celebration of Blackness by Nina Simone, and Négritude – a literary, cultural and intellectual movement aimed at raising Black consciousness across African and its diaspora.
Join us for a powerful, joyful excavation of Black womanhood, art and creativity from one of the most dazzling creators of the day. We're delivering this beauty cabaret-style at the gorgeous Assembly Roxy, there will be a bar, there will be a film, Make A Night Of It!!
“Catherine Joy White is an extraordinary writer, the kind who turns non-fiction into poetry. her forthcoming book This Thread of Gold reveals beautifully how the legacy of Black women's writing across generations has woven itself into her heart and soul, and the power of their legacies. It's a stunning debut from a young author, and yet feels, and reads, like it has been decades in the making.” - AFUA HIRSCH
