It’s now official that last week was Europe’s hottest month on record: England, France, Spain and Germany reported heat records, with people unable to work in the scourcing sun, and wildfires destroying communities and eco-systems that are centuries old. Here in Scotland, firefighters battled highland wildfires for a whole week, with smoke and fire covering an entire landscape - while the same areas also faced flooding.
The climate movement needs to return now.
For several years now, Climate Camp Scotland has been one of the largest gatherings of the climate justice movement in Scotland. At our camps in Aberdeen, Grangemouth and Mossmorran, we centred the impacts of fossil fuels on working-class communities living under the shadow of our largest polluters and the way the transition from fossil fuels is being unjustly led by corporations. We challenged fossil fuel corporations on their own turf, camping in the vicinity and hosting mass direct action against them. This year, we focus on how the climate crisis and the far right are linked and how we can resist them.
The far-right is on the rise everywhere. The links between fossil fuels and fascism have never been clearer. We see many companies here in Scotland benefitting financially from the climate crisis while also contributing to far-right regimes across the world, such as SeaPeak who ship gas on behalf of Russia and finance the Russian war on Ukraine, or Ithaca Energy who are owned by Delek - an Israeli company on a UN blacklist for human rights abuses in the occupied West Bank of Palestine. This obsession with extracting fossil fuels is not just a short-term resource but has long been used as a colonial tool. Large areas of the Global South are turned into sacrifice zones for the benefit of the Global North, harming both people and the planet. The fossil fuel industry funds the far-right, including Nigel Farage’s wee discount fascists in Reform UK, who promise our very own British “Drill Baby Drill” even though half of Scotland is on fire.
This year’s camp will in the central belt, a week full of workshops, learning how we can take action together. The camp itself is a collaborative effort from everyone involved and whatever your skill set is, participate - at camp we’re all crew. With a really exciting program of workshops this year including workshops on trans resistance, migrant justice in times of fascism, and what the climate movement needs to do a year before the Scottish elections.
Whether you're a seasoned campaigner, want to find out how you can get involved, or just want to imagine what a better world could look like, we would love to see you at this year’s camp. It will take all of us to build resistance against the new age of fossil fascism.
