Fossil fuel money is everywhere around us, permeating capitalism to such a degree that it’s difficult to imagine a world without either. For a true shift away from fossil fuel wealth, and the violence it brings, we will need many shifts of power - both that which heats our homes and that which governs our lives.

With the UK government licensing new oil fields, the need for these power shifts is urgent. Come along to explore what they might look like and what kind of organising could take us there.

Our Speakers

Terry Macalister is a journalist, author and filmmaker. He was Energy Editor at The Guardian, co-author of Crude Britannia: how oil shaped a nation, and an executive producer of The Oil Machine documentary. He is currently making a documentary about women climate prisoners.

This is Rigged is a direct action campaign targeting the Scottish government's lack of action on both the climate and cost-of-living crisis.

Our Chair

Yara Rodrigues Fowler is a writer from South London. Her first novel, Stubborn Archivist, was published in 2019. Yara’s second novel, there are more things, was nominated for the Orwell Prize for Political Fiction 2022 and Goldsmiths Prize 2022. Most recently, Yara was named one of Granta's best young British writers, in their once-in-a-decade list. She is currently co-writing a play called The Conference of the Trees with Majid Adin and Connie Treves, based on the poems by members of the Change The Word poetry collective at Good Chance Theatre. Yara is also a part-time climate justice organiser.
