No Surrender: Radical Fictions as Graphic novels

Featured Speakers

Scarlett & Sophie Rickard, Heather Palmer

This event is a part of Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair: Our Fight 2022 series. Click to view more from this festival.

Scarlett and Sophie Rickard's first graphic novel, Mann’s Best Friend was a story about an unsuitable dog, set in the rugged North West of England.

Recently their work has made use of a shared fascination for social history and a drive to explore important but overlooked political literature in adaptations that bring authentic texts to life using the graphic format.

Their engaging and accessible graphic novel adaptation of Robert Tressell’s The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists was nominated for an Eisner Award in 2022. Their latest work is a sister for The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists: a graphic adaptation of Constance Maud’s suffrage classic No Surrender, which is being officially launched at Edinburgh's Radical Book Fair!

Join us for an event exploring their craft, the stories they tell and the histories they surface!

Our speakers:

Scarlett and Sophie Rickard are graphic novelists. Collaborating on every stage of a project, Sophie makes up the stories and Scarlett draws the pictures. This was been going on since they were children, when Scarlett’s constant refrain was ’Tell me what to draw!’ The sisters grew up in the Ribble Valley in Lancashire and now work 200 miles apart from one another.
