In a way, the short story is the perfect literary form for a time of emergencies: within a short space, it can pack the punch of a novel, jolting you out of the status quo and into a new vision, possibility, even a slightly new way of being and acting in the world. Take 'The Garden of Forking Paths' by Jorge Luis Borges (one of Jim's faves), George Saunders's 'Escape from Spiderhead' which always has me weeping and laughing every other line, as it build toward its heart-opening end, or one of Noor's recomendations: 'Get out of my House' by Ziad Khadash, as just a few examples.

These are some stories close to our booksellers' hearts - pieces of fiction which have stayed with us and are ardently one of a kind. In this list, you'll find the books where you can read these stories, along with a few other brilliant collections.
